  18. <p>     Unification is proving to be a disaster for terrorists.
  19. Cooperation between East and West Germany has led to the arrest
  20. of nine suspected members of the notorious Red Army Faction.
  21. All were caught in East Germany. Last week the trail reached
  22. all the way to former Communist Party boss Erich Honecker, who
  23. is accused of personally giving safe haven to the terrorists.
  24. East German Interior Minister Peter-Michael Diestel said that
  25. Honecker and former Minister of State Security Erich Mielke
  26. knew exactly how the now disbanded ministry had provided R.A.F.
  27. members with false papers, jobs and protection.

  29. <p>     Diestel said that harboring terrorists was Honecker's
  30. "personal hobby." The former East German leader, recovering
  31. from cancer surgery, issued a stout denial of all the charges,
  32. insisting that East Germany "did its share" to combat
  33. terrorism.
